Read a Good Book Lately on Your Road to Success?

By Leanne Hoagland-Smith

To be the best for me means to acquire as much knowledge so that I infuse that knowledge into working with my clients as they work toward their goals of improved results. Sometimes, this means for me to find a new book on my own such as Mobilizing Minds or to listen to one of my mentors, coaches, colleagues or friends. This past weekend I learned about another good book - Leadership and Self Deception.

In this book, the author uses a parable, a story to describe Self Deception and how it affects personal leadership and therefore organizational leadership. A visual is also constructed, that being a box. Are you in the box or outside of the box? The visual is used to help the reader self assess his or her own behaviors associated with being in the box (self-absorbed) or out of the box (focused on others). In another medium, one of the Star Wars movies, this overview was simply stated as Your focus creates your reality.

As we travel the road to success, we have incredible opportunities to read many good books and not so good books. Even if we are pressed for time, we can subscribe to services that provide four to 10 page executive summaries about recently released books.

Possibly, if we are fans of the Internet, we can bookmark a favorite site that provides excellent and detailed book reviews as well. From this resource, we can determine if we want to invest our resources of time, energy and money to read this book in hardcover or paperback.

For those of us who wish a respite from the busy world, we can hunker down at our favorite library or bookstore and read a good book. And if we truly do not have time to read a book because of pressing work to family schedules, books on tape or audio CDs provide a solution to this obstacle.

To be the best that I can be demands that I become a self directed learner where I am continually exposing myself to new ideas that will help me master success. With information doubling every year, even reading one book a week is not enough.

So what is your good book of late?
