A rare book is an unusual, old book that is classified as valuable due to its unique qualities in content and structure. A collection of unique materials constitutes this kind of book since its contents may never be found elsewhere in archives or libraries. A book can be desirable to an individual private collector but may fail to appease a university or college. Many people currently engage in the activity of collecting rare books for monetary value. Nevertheless, there are agencies responsible for the preservation of unique collections of academic materials considered unique and exceptional. The resources include literature, scientific and exceptional academic materials. Such books are often transferred to secure places where readers can access them without taking copies with them for the sake of copyright protection.
The criteria of classifying a rare book is often the age. Different regions have customary traditions upon which a book is judged to appear. Experts recommend that it is important to assess the dates based on the relevance of the materials and their application in a specific period. For instance, nineteenth century material may not have appealed to students or readers a century ago. The trends change and contents of books undergo transformation as well, but the way in which a material of antiquity remains unique is the facts that are not prone to changes. Rare books have the basic facts that do not change even after a long period. The style of presentation makes a book qualify as either rare or obsolete. Readers usually perceive secondary and primary thoughts presented in written material differently. Consequently, the materials with comprehensive information on topical issues are classified as rare - for preservation, for use by future generations.
In an academic setting, the sole purpose of a rare book is to create a unique site for antiquated collections that enhance reference resources in an institution. This implies that such research materials support complex research for graduates and other faculty levels. It is a common expectation that reputable university libraries have archives with unique study materials for in-depth research based on particular books. The collections of such rare materials have information that was once extensively used by former faculty members. It is therefore important to ensure that an academic institution reserves rare books to allow students to gain deep knowledge from search materials. This can be achieved by rating a rare book according to its relevance and subjects it covers. Academicians have the responsibility of identifying rare materials within their areas of specialization in order to boost the reserves of rare books.
Generally, materials dating from early 1830s qualify as rare books for collection. However, many books dating before this period are equally significant. Many people classify rare or ancient books based on the introduction of printing in particular geographic areas. There is an increasing concern for the publications made in the 19th century, to maintain the original catalogues and original binding to make them valuable for research. Rare resources convey a history of thoughts transmitted to posterity.

How to Use Power Questions That Create an Irresistible Urge to Buy With Your Prospects

Did you ever end up buying something that you did not know you wanted, and yet it felt the most natural thing in the world? Can you remember what the sales person said to you? Did it feel like they really understood you? Would you like to be able to get that same reaction from your customers? Read this article to learn how to woo your future customers the same way.
My regular readers, by now will have realised that the art of all successful selling, is to ask the questions. All good sales questions have the following characteristics;
* Ask;
o The Right Person
o AT the Right Time
o The Right Questions
* Listen, then have;
o The Right Answers
o IN the Right Way
o With The Right Evidence
* At all times have a great Attitude
Whether you like it or not, you are always selling, selling benefits for someone, including yourself. When you go to the bank for a loan, you are selling yourself and your business idea. When you ask someone on a date, you are selling them on spending time with you. When you play a sport with someone, you are selling them on the fact you are an enjoyable person to spend time with.
I am however going to assume for this article that you have an offering that you wish people to buy, and I will cover 4 times that you have an opportunity to sell your concept, by asking the right questions. Questions to ask at a seminar or networking event
The one-many networking concept, means that you get a chance to speak, while many people listen to you. You are speaking to many people, while they get an understanding of what you can do for them. Everyone always wants to know what you can do for them.
You stand up and before you deliver your irresistible sales presentation, that will have buyers flocking to your door, you must start off by asking them a few questions.
I am going to use as an example, one of my clients, who help their customers dramatically decrease their expenses, by having the experts analyse their spend patterns, and negotiate fantastic deals on their behalf.
In order to maximise your audience's understanding of your proposition, you must involve them in the learning process. The questions they would ask at an event may be as follows;
* Would everybody please stand up for a moment?
* Would everybody, who is 100% certain that they are fully in control of their costs and expenses, and are not paying a cent over the odds, please sit down.
* OK, would everyone, who is happy to continue paying over the odds, please sit down.
* OK, you can all sit down again, but I would really like to know why you have not done something about this before. In fact why don't I see which of the three most common reasons, for not doing this, matches your circumstances.
o You never thought about it before
o You don't have the time to do it, because you are swamped
o You need to bring in someone who knows what they are doing and has done it before.
Now can you imagine, in a room of 20 Financial Directors, how many of them, would not want to know more about these guys, and if they could get substantial savings, as a result of their services. Questions to ask on the phone
Most people on the phone get hung up on their result. In fact some gurus even teach you how to feel good when you get rejected. The main reason that you get rejected, is not because the customer does not want what you have, it is because they don't want to be sold to yet again!
So have a conversation with them. Your end goal should be to find out if there is a match between you and the stranger on the other end of the phone, and to find out what they want to do about it. To get to this ask the following types of questions;
* Are you able to speak for a minute?
* Would you please be able to help me out with something?
* I was trying to understand if you were 100% certain that you were getting the very best value for money from all your suppliers.
* Would be interested in knowing how much we saved for XYZ Company?
* Now I am not sure if we could do the same for you unless we took some time to explore this together, how would you suggest we proceed from here?
Questions to ask in a prospect meeting
Very similar to those above, your questions should be aimed at getting the prospect to tell you in their words, what their problems are, and how they believe you can help them, with your offering.
* At minimum, you should ask the following questions;
* Thanks for taking the time to see me, how long do we have?
* Great, now that I am here, what precisely was it that made you want to see me?
* Could explain to me in detail; how that is impacting what you do in your business?
* If that were solved, what would you be able to do then?
* How would you put a value on getting that?
* When would you like to start getting this value?
* What has stopped you up to now, from getting this value?
Conclusion
Just try these questions out, modified of course to your own business. They may seem a little strange at first, but then again, so did walking when you were 12 months old! Take a note of the results, I would love to know how much more business you win.

Her latest fashion guide , The One Hundred: A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own, got a release on August 26, 2008, and it was taken with enthusiasm galore.
While her first book dealt with many how to's on fashion, her latest creation is full of hundred well-defined commandments on what to's.
As the name suggests, the book helps any fashionable woman to sort out hundred most valuable and essential fashion articles to make her wardrobe fully equipped.
Garcia, a fashion director, got the inspiration to pen down this book when she was forced to move out of her flat for almost two years.
As not having a complete and full-fledged wardrobe out of her flat, she had to make frequent trips to her flat to grab the her fashion products.Those tiresome trips sparked an idea to enlist the most needed hundred things for a woman.
"Every once in a while, I'd run back to the apartment to snatch an item or two," She said, " Soon I realized I had the answer to the questions that women kept asking me, "What are the must-haves?"
The book's list of can't-live-withouts include things like a tuxedo jacket, a well-fit jacket, a panama hat, etc. It also tells a lot about things designer belts etc. Not only these things, it also emphasizes that if you like to wear a short skirt, then your wardrobe is incomplete without knee-high boots.

I'm Addicted to Superhero Comics, Movies, and Cartoons

X-men, Superman, Spiderman and his amazing friends, The Hulk, Justice League, Dragon ball Z, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Thundercats, Bravestarr, Thundarr the Barbarian, Ironman, Fantastic 4, and so on and so on. I'm 33 and I'm addicted to superhero cartoons and movies.
I mean every since the invention of the DVR (digital video recorder), I can't get enough of all the crime fighting stuff. Am I alone, and does anybody else like an overload of Spidey or X-men? Maybe I'm jealous, and it's the fact that kids today are spoiled silly, and as a kid I was unable to watch toons quite as much. I remember watching a little bit of cartoons before school, a hour or so after, maybe.
To be honest Saturday morning was the main time of the week to get your fill of cartoons. But in this day and age of 1,000,000 cable channels, there are several that just show cartoons. Which means that at any given time, a kid can just turn it on and watch away. I use to call my son in the room, just so I could say, " I was watching superhero shows with him". Now I just don't care anymore, and I DVR everything. Justice League Unlimited is my favorite right now and it's like the soaps for dudes or something.
I never knew watching Superman and Batman could be so drama filled, and everybody has a girlfriend. But enough about me and what I love, what is the message that superheroes convey. I think that heroes appeal to the good inside of everyone. We all would like to think that if we somehow gained unlimited power, that it would be used for the good of all mankind. I mean dedicating your entire existence to helping others, that's what a hero truly is. Which brings me to my favorite part of the comics, the Super Villain.
It's amazing how most of the villains were all good at one point, and there is always a specific chain of events to turn them evil. Is that the truth about most of mankind, and does everybody have just a little bit of evil hidden deep inside of them? Most villains are extremely rational, too rational and blinded by there desires. In desperate situations they can often be reasoned with for the good of everybody involved. But some evil knows no boundaries, an chaotic evil characters are the best example of this. Some beings just don't care about money, wealth, or assets. There only purpose and deepest desire is the watch everything and everybody burn.
When I was younger and read about Superman's battles with Darkseid, superman asked him, "what is was that he was after". He replied, "the Anti-Life Equation", and I'm like 8 years old but I fully understood what he sought! Total and complete devastation, and nothing less would be acceptable for him. Superman then replied," I will never stop fighting and I will always be here to stop you. The world NEEDS heroes like that! It could be said the firefighters and red cross volunteers are real life heroes.
Courage in face of danger and hopelessness, that's my definition of a hero and I love them for that. I think I just enjoy watching the struggle between good and evil. It never seems to bore me, and I just can't get enough of it. I'm always open to a discussion with anybody regarding, superpowers, best heroes, villains or anything else DC or Marvel related.

Book Review - Herbcrafts by Tessa Evelegh

This book is a rare find: it combines gorgeous photography with crafts so simple even I could make them.
It’s subtitled Practical Inspirations for Natural Gifts, Country Crafts and Decorative Displays, and it is both practical and inspiring. Even if you’ve never given gifts from the garden or been any good at crafts, this book will give you ideas. Anyone can grow herbs (or, if it’s too late for that, buy them at the supermarket), and most people can make a few stitches or glue dried leaves to a picture frame.
Most of the 40 projects can be summed up very simply. For example:
Stitch a hardy sachet from ticking, then fill it with aromatic herbs to make a tough mat on which to stand hot pots. When you put a pan on it, the heat will release the herbs' rich fragrance. (p. 84)
Now, I never would have thought of that – and I have about a pound of homegrown mint drying in the spare room.
A bonus is that many of these items will be inexpensive to mail as gifts -- dried plants are some of the lightest materials you can find. Better stick to mailing them within your own country, though. It wouldn’t do to have a package containing unlabeled, homegrown leaves opened by customs.
Others, involving live plants or clay flowerpots, will have to be delivered by hand – or kept for yourself. Either way, it’s worth checking out.

Water4Gas is one of those products that make it very difficult to deliver an unbiased review- any product that offers a cheaper option to the public and an alternative way of thinking will always be an effective 'Buy' in my books. As the times change, so do people's needs. For every action there is a reaction. The action: Gas Price Increasing. The reaction: Water4Gas.
Water4Gas is an eBook, created by Ozzie Freedom, that helps you modify your car's engine allowing it to run on water and gas. It must be said that many people were skeptical when water4gas first came out a few years ago but later came to realise that this product does indeed work.
Not many people know this but the idea of "Water as Fuel" was already thought of in the 1920's. My only reason in to why it was not implemented then was because Gas Prices were cheap and of not much concern.
Back to Water4Gas, make sure you keep this in mind: your car will not run on water alone- once you have installed the necessary equipment, your car will then use water to supplement the gas in your tank.
There are however two negative aspects:
-Water4Gas is an eBook and does not come with the materials. It is your task to go and buy the materials.
- Being an eBook, you will have to print the whole book to make your life easier

There are many "Water as Fuel" products out there but I must admit that Water4Gas is the best product for the following reasons:

Many of the used books sitting on the shelves now would make very interesting reading that many avid readers may find hard to put down if they were to pick it up. Some of these used books include Exploring The Unknown by Stuart D. Scott, which is takes a wonderful look at the mysteries of this world. In 1993, Workman Publishing Company released a fabulous book that answered some of the toughest questions of life by Kathy Wollard, which was entitled How Come. This book is illustrated terrificly and would be worth looking for at your local used book store.
As you are browsing through the hundreds of used books at your local used book store, then you may discover all types of titles from the humorous to the serious to the weird. Of course, there is no way that even the avid reader could ever read every single book they every laid their eyes on, but there are many used books at your local book store just waiting for some one to take some interest in them. Many of these books are no longer in print and are worth picking up and taking the time to read each page. One of these books is the Readers' Digest Facts And Fallacies - Stories Of The Strange And Unusual, which was published in 1988, and is a collection of odd stories that have been totally researched, then presented in a well formed presentation. It may be hard for you to locate a copy due to it being out of print, but it would be worth adding to your personal library.
Several of the used books offered at your local book store have won awards or their authors have. Some such used books that are definitely worth checking into include The Whistling Season by Ivan Doig, Color Of The Sea by John Hamamura, and The Floor Of The Sky by Pamela Carter Joern, which have all won the Alex Award. These used books and many others might be a little bit dog eared and the pages could be a little yellow, but they are so well written and the stories hidden between the covers are worth reading.
It seems as if the older books have been written better than books that are currently being written in this modern day. Authors have trouble at time expressing their ideas clearly and will add extra adjectives in an attempt of creating a smooth transition, but instead it creates a book of adjectives. One of the greatest authors, in my personal opinion, that could most definitely get his point across to his readers so that they were able to actually feel like that could close their eyes and see what he was writing was Louis Lamour. The majority of his books and short stories are westerns, but he did write some poetry that will make your heart leap with his written words.

The History of Fantastic 4 Comic Books

The Fantastic 4 Comic Book was first published in 1961 in the First issue of the Fantastic 4 Comic Book. The comic book series was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Fantastic 4 Comics currently calls the Baxter Building as its current base of operations, located at the Four Freedom Plaza.
The superheroes of the Fantastic Four Series were both family and friends who were exposed to cosmic rays during an accident in outer space.
The team is made up of Mr. Fantastic or Reed Richards, a scientific genius who is also team leader and can stretch his body. Next is Susan Richards she is The Invisible Woman and Reed Richards’ wife, second in command.
We then have Susan’s brother Johnny Storm also known as The Human Torch. Finally, we have Ben Grimm, friend and known as The Thing.
The team gets new leaders when Storm, the former leader of the X-Men and her mate The Black Panther, who is the King of the African Nation. Storm can control the weather while The Black Panther has superhuman senses, super strength, speed, stamina, and agility.
The Fantastic 4 Comic Book characters are known for their loving, if often messed up family, unlike many of the other superheroes surrounding them. They are also known for their celebrity status and petty disputes.
Fantastic 4 Comic Book is known to have a major impact in the ascension of Marvel Comic’s from small time publication to an Entertainment Mogul. The Fantastic 4 Comic Book evolved into a well-watched cartoon series, and then finally onto the Big Screen in 2005. The Fantastic 4 Comic Book has had its ups and downs in the Comic Book Industry but continues moving forward.
In the third issue of the Fantastic 4 Comics, it named itself The Greatest Comic Magazine in the World! Jack Kirby designed the cover art though the inker was unconfirmed.
During a controversial golf game, the publisher of Marvel and members of DC Comics talked over that, though DC was successful, Marvel was outselling their top Character Series.
Stan Lee wanted characters that real people could relate to, so with help from Kirby, the Fantastic 4 Comic Book was made. The comic series continued to make history as the members of the Fantastic 4 team showed true family characteristics and even brought baby Benjamin Franklin Richards into the picture in 1968 in the Four Annual series number 6. The baby development in turn lead to Mr. Fantastic and The Invisible Woman taking a leave and Storm and The Black Panther taking over.
The plot of the Fantastic 4 Comics evolved farther with Sue and Reed loosing a baby and then Sue’s brother Johnny falling in love with the Thing’s past girlfriend, Alicia Masters.
Johnny and Alicia fall in love and eventually marry, causing a deep and long standing rift between The Thing and Johnny. The Thing eventually quit the Fantastic 4 and then She-Hulk was brought in to replace him for a long time.
The plot of the Fantastic 4 Comic Book took even more twists and turns after the Thing returned and his current girlfriend mutated into a female Thing and himself mutated even more. The Fantastic 4 Comic Book continues to provide the much needed and loved characteristics of having real people portrayed in superhuman circumstances.

This book is a must read for those that want to understand what the U.S. Counter insurgency strategy is all about. It defines what they didn't know before going into Iraq and all of the new policies that are not old hat, but new thinking. It explains the struggle of the U.S. Military to adapt itself to a post 911 world.
The book doesn't stop there, but integrates what counter intelligence has learned from studying the tactics and theories of other countries and how this is applied to contemporary usage. It even deals with historical insurgency in an overview fashion and how it was handled as far back as the English government dealing with rebellion from the Welsh, the Irish, and the Scottish. It also goes over the insurgency involved in the Viet Nam war. The discussion of how the civilian and military counter parts should be integrated in a good counterinsurgency plan is detailed well.
It really covers everything significant in counterinsurgency planning like ethics, logistics, operations, and intelligence. It puts more emphasis on grounds troops than air power, which both are vital forces in the insurgency fight, so in this sense it is lacking enough information on a vital component. None-the-less it is an excellent book.
This book will get anyone interested up to snuff about how our government is handling counterinsurgency and let them know if the policies will leave troops in a host country in good shape to keep their government going or not. There hasn't been another book written like it.

History of Dick and Jane Readers

Do you remember sitting in your first grade classroom learning to read from one of the Dick and Jane books? We older folks on the planet can just about mark our ages based on which Dick and Jane edition we learned to read from. Learn to read with Sally, Dick, and Jane? Then you are probably a child of the fifties. Remember Mike, Pam and Penny? Then you most likely are a child of the sixties, when black children were introduced into the readers.
The series is called the Curriculum Foundation Series and was authored by Dr. William S. Gray and William H. Elson. The Curriculum Foundation Series evolved out of a set of elementary readers called the Elson Readers. A Dick and Jane collector will recognize some of the same stories in both sets of readers. All serious Dick and Jane collectors should strive to include the Elson Readers in their sets.
The first Dick and Jane book was a 1930 Pre-Reader, a wordless picture book. New titles were introduced in 1940, 1946, 1951, 1962, and lastly in 1965. The illustrators for Dick and Jane books changed, as well as the look of the books through the decades. Mew the kitten became Puff. Happy changed from a Terrier to Spot the Cocker Spaniel. Toys changed, as did clothing, and the cars Mother and Father drove.
The books are based on limited basic vocabulary and the plot of each story is delivered through profuse illustrations. Well-known Dick and Jane book illustrator Eleanor Campbell used photographs of children at play to create vivid colorful illustrations. Richard Childress had his two young daughters model for his Jane and Sally illustrations.
Besides the paper books with staples and cloth tape spines, there were also Dick and Jane hard cover books, workbooks, guide books, posters, puzzles, calendars, napkins, valentines, mugs and teacher manuals. Do you remember sitting in your first grade classroom learning to read from one of the Dick and Jane books? We older folks on the planet can just about mark our ages based on which Dick and Jane edition we learned to read from. Learn to read with Sally, Dick, and Jane? Then you are probably a child of the fifties. Remember Mike, Pam and Penny? Then you most likely are a child of the sixties, when black children were introduced into the readers.
The series is called the Curriculum Foundation Series and was authored by Dr. William S. Gray and William H. Elson. The Curriculum Foundation Series evolved out of a set of elementary readers called the Elson Readers. A Dick and Jane collector will recognize some of the same stories in both sets of readers. All serious Dick and Jane collectors should strive to include the Elson Readers in their sets.
The first Dick and Jane book was a 1930 Pre-Reader, a wordless picture book. New titles were introduced in 1940, 1946, 1951, 1962, and lastly in 1965. The illustrators for Dick and Jane books changed, as well as the look of the books through the decades. Mew the kitten became Puff. Happy changed from a Terrier to Spot the Cocker Spaniel. Toys changed, as did clothing, and the cars Mother and Father drove.

Good Books For Your Travels

There are some really good books that you should have when you are traveling. You might not know what they are or where you are going to be able to find them, but you can if you are willing to look for them.
The traveling books that you should have will help you not only get you from one place to another, but will also help you to be ok with the car that you are driving. You don't want to be on the side of the road without knowing anything about the car that you are in.
The first of the books that you should have is an atlas. You can get an atlas as used books but you have to keep in mind that the roads may not all be on there and that you might get lost. An atlas is something that will help you to get from one place to another and will help you to keep from getting lost in the middle of nowhere. If you don't have it, you might get lost and that would not be a good thing.
You will also need to a manual for the car that you are driving. This way you will know all about it when you are on the road. Also it will keep you from getting stuck because you didn't know where the oil goes or the transmission fluid. These can be found as used books, but you should make sure that they have all of the information that you need to do what you need to with the car that you are driving.
You also really need to have a book that will tell you about the first aid procedures that you might need when you are on the road. This way you will be prepared when something happens instead of not knowing what to do. These can be found as new or even lightly used books in many places. Try a yard sale or at your local bookstore for the best deals on them as used books.
There are books that you need in the new or used books form so that you can keep your family safe while you travel. Just remember to find the used books or new ones that will give you the most ups to date information and you will be well on your way to having a great time on your vacation.

Swing Arm Lamps - Enjoy a Good Book Before Bedtime

Do you enjoy reading before you go to bed? What should you do for lighting? We all know that overhead lighting in the bedroom seems harsh and does not provide an inviting glow. And please do not tell me you use the light attached to the fan! For reading, nothing beats a swing arm lamp. You are able to read well into the night without disturbing your partner and you are able to adjust the lamp to your comfort.
A few things to keep in mind:
Cheap lamps do not swing well and will not last long, so do not even bother. Invest in a decently priced lamp ($150 and up per lamp). Dimmer switches or 3-way switches make them even better. The Classic Swing Arm Lamp has a diffuser (an acrylic disc that sits at the bottom of the shade) which provides soft light that is very comfortable to read by.
Installation - You have a couple of choices when it comes to installation. You can hire an electrician to hard wire the lamp into the wall at your chosen height. The lamp will appear to float on the wall and you will not see the cord. The other choice is to mount it on the wall with hardware that is usually provided. The cord will hang down and you can hide it by buying a cord cover. They usually have them in the basic finishes (Black, White, and Brass) or you can finish them yourself. If you buy a lamp with a very special finish, you will want to seriously consider hiring an electrician or the effect will be lost with the ugly cord hanging down or a finish on the cover that does not quite match.
Height - What height should you mount the lamp? You need to keep in mind the overall height of your mattress and the height of the user. Generally you want the bottom edge of the lamp to be 20 inches above the top of the mattress. Adjust higher or lower for people who are not average height. Jump in bed and have someone hold it at different heights to make sure you get it right.

Marrying a Man, Raising a Husband

With a title like this, most readers will be expecting either a very serious "How-to" book from possibly some noted counselors from the 1960's or a guide at realizing how humorous the relationship call marriage really is.
Marrying a Man, Raising a Husband turns out to be is anecdotes from the authors about situations that have come up during the course of their combined long lasting relationships. The stories are humorous, thought-provoking and very much ones that all women who are in a long term union can identify with, no matter how short or long those unions have been around. All the stories tell how they have learned to communicate with their spouses.
They show how men interpret what we say and how we need to learn how to state what it is we want to get across in "speak" that leaves them no choice but to understand us.
My personal favorite of the book was the way a shopping list gets interpretated by our spouses. Here are some of the prime examples of how husbands and wives differ:
Lashawn's list: milk vegetable oil bread
Husband's list: beer motor oil cookies
I think you get the picture. My own hubby of 27 years has his own "speak", which is why I loved the grocery list entry the best. My entry that I would have loved to have added to the same chapter would go like this:
Carine's list: Fruit Vegetables Chicken fish tofu Soy milk
Steve's list: red meat red meat red meat red meat
Then he'd spend a fortune at the said "meat" counter and tell me we certainly didn't need to go to the market again for a very long time, because "look at all I bought and the freezer's full".
The authors didn't write the book to criticize husbands-more to bring to light what we need to do to understand them and "raise" them to a level where we love them for who they are and in turn raise ourselves to who we want "us" as a couple to be.

Third World Reality Checks

If the world is serious and I believe at least much of the world is about Global Warming, Climate Change or Mankind’s pollution then we need to sit down with all nations of the world and have a reality-check talk. You see, we do need to stop polluting our atmosphere, but we cannot have a worldwide meaningful discussion about human pollution without including China.
What causes Civilizations to collapse or crumble? We know from anthropology and archeology that it has to do with resources, water, agriculture, weather, wars, diseases and a host of other things. As the coordinator for the Online Think Tank is yet another reason that I keep recommending these books to those who wish to talk about feeding the Third World;
"Collapse; Why Civilizations Succeed or Fail" by Jared Diamond
"The Comedians" by Graham Greene about Poppa Doc and Baby Doc
"Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad
"Dark Star Safari" by Paul Theroux
I believe people ought to study up on this stuff before unilaterally deciding how to help other nations. Of course I have my own theories of what comes first, second, third and such in aid packages, funding and infrastructures? Such as water, sewer, economics, health, roads, education and power. You see, if we are to bring this world together and indeed unite it in a common cause then we must be thinking here.
So often folks will demand we help the Third World without thinking it through and we waste millions if not billions of dollars and then we are left with nothing to show for it as things never took hold and it is a shame. But throwing good money after bad in the wrong order makes no sense either. If folks have not read these books or understand the reality, then how on Earth are they really able to make a dent in the problem.
I ask that you at least read these books for commenting on the situation. I certainly hope this article is of interest and that is has propelled thought. Nineteen Minutes - A Waste of Time?

I will first admit that I was a Jodi Picoult virgin. This was my first novel by this best-selling author...I haven't decided if it will be my last or not.
Nineteen Minutes is sure to capture your interest, because most of us are quickly able to identify with one of the many diverse characters. Picoult does a wonderful job of drawing in her audience and conjuring up sufficient emotions that readers will struggle to put the book aside. She is masterful at setting up the story using flashbacks and character development.
The story is gripping and sad, and all too real. No generation seems immune to the pain of the social stereotyping that begins at a very young age. This story offers meaningful insight into the issue of bullying from many different perspectives: the victim, the bystander, the offender, the accomplices, and the system-which in the case of Peter Houghton, seems to have failed.
This book is well worth the read, especially for teens who may not realize the harm being done on a deep emotional level when bullying takes place, and for parents who make a habit of comparing siblings to one another, to the detriment of all. What is probably the books most striking irony is only a minor detail in the scheme of things. Readers may wonder why the fact that Peter's father is a college professor who teaches the value of happiness to others but is unable to find any in his personal life doesn't play a more important role in the overall theme.
Unfortunately, the ending leaves much to be desired. It seems that the author's deadline arrived or she just got tired of writing and dropped the entire story line leaving many questions tumbling around in the mind of the reader. The surprise ending seems too loose to fit such a tightly woven narrative leading up to the story's climax. Too many important details beg to be explained.
There are a few inconsistencies that were subtle, but certainly would have been easy enough for the author to overcome, particularly the weather patterns in New Hampshire in March, Another pet peeve is the over-use of certain words or phrases, close enough together that the reader is aware of an overt verb-favoritism. If you're looking for a satisfying resolution at the end of a story-keep looking because you won't find it here.
